The Tale of ‘Light Up Pismo Beach’

An adaptation by Jo Ann Lloyd of the
Tale of Light Up Pismo Beach
as told by Joseph Michael Scott

Once upon a dark and stormy Christmas Eve, Santa Claus became lost and confused. Disoriented, he nearly missed Pismo Beach entirely in 2010. When he finally finished his rounds that year, he told Mrs. Claus what had happened, and asked for her sage advice.

“My dear,” Santa said, “my eyesight isn’t what it used to be, and the glow from Rudolph’s shiny red nose has dimmed a bit as well. I would hate to miss Pismo Beach on my 2011 gift-giving rounds, but at night that little city has become too dark for me to see, it just blends right in with the dark waters of the Pacific. What do you think I should do?”

Turns out, Mrs. Claus had a very bright idea, indeed. “Santa, no one expects your vision to be as sharp as it used to be, but if you were to miss delivering gifts to the residents of that classic California beach town, Christmas day would be very dark, too. Why don’t we ask the business owners and residents to help by stringing up bright white lights near their roofline across the front of their storefronts and homes? You couldn’t possibly miss the town if it was all lit up.”

Santa thought for a moment and then gave Mrs. Claus a big hug. He agreed that to “Light Up Pismo Beach” was a very bright idea.

Word spread throughout the small town of Pismo Beach, and soon some *“Believers” agreed to help Mr. & Mrs. Claus spread the word. The Believers went door to door, explaining the concept and importance of Light Up Pismo Beach. Soon there was a long list of Pismo Beach merchants and residents who pledged their loyalty in helping Santa find his way.

And when others heard of the good work of the Believers they asked how they might become one as well. And it seems that they could. You see the Believers really wanted to light up Price House for the holidays as well. But they did not know were to find the money to pay for the lights. And then they remembered all those who to wanted to be Believers and came up with a plan. You see, all that one has to do to become a Believer is to donate at least $1 to offset the cost of lighting up the historic Price House located in Pismo Beach.

It seemed as if there could be nothing but a happy ending. But as is the case in every tale some evil lurks, and in this instance it is the Non-Believers, also known as the Icicles.

Oh but wait. Those miserly merchants who want darkness to prevail would not succeed for they would be visited by a vision of what they might become if they dare not change their ways.

It seems a team of Believers (dressed as Grinches naturally), would make an unexpected and oh so uncomfortable visit. And they will explain to the Icicles why it’s so important to keep the holiday spirit aglow. All in good fun and in the spirit of the holidays of course. (Wink, Wink)

Soon everyone throughout the land was looking forward to the “Big Day,” when all the Believers throughout the City of Pismo Beach would show their support and demonstrate how one bright idea can save Christmas for an entire city.

And all it took was “Believing”.
